7 Critical Questions to ask before you hire a business coach

Saturday, November 5th, 2011

It is amazing how many people today are becoming business coaches, life coaches etc. By and large the coaching industry is open to anyone who randomly decides one day to “become a coach”. I see ads all the time for becoming a coach and just because someone gets a certificate, training course or some other credential doesn’t mean they are a good business coach.

Before I became a business coach I worked in the mortgage industry. I started and sold 3 different mortgage companies and during my time in that industry I saw how many people who one day were bagging groceries for a living and the next day they were a loan originator. The only requirement to become a loan officer was that you were breathing. Unfortunately, I am seeing that same trend happen in the coaching business.

It is almost like saying…”Hey if you want to start a business, then become a coach. Anyone can do it!” Give me a break!

If you are a business owner, want to start a business, or work in sales and are considering hiring a business coach here are 7 questions that you need to ask before you pay one red cent to a coach.

  1. What is your business experience? (It better be real BIG, and in the area you NEED)
  2. What has been your business success? (It better be BIG)
  3. Why did you become a business coach? (Huge!)
  4. Do you have a coach? (They better answer yes) if so, who is it?
  5. What successes have your clients had? (Again, this is crucial)
  6. Can I talk to your clients? (The answer better be YES)
  7. What can I expect to get from coaching? (This is BIG! Most coaches can not correctly explain the difference between a coach, consultant and trainer)

Remember, just because someone says they are a business coach, doesn’t mean they have a clue of how to help you. You need to clearly define where you want to go and then carefully pick the person to get you there.

My personal coach, mentor and friend, John Maxwell says…

“It is not only important what you learn, but who you learn it from”

3 Warning Signs Your Business is in Trouble

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Small business owners, Solopreneurs, and professional service providers such as coaches, speakers, loan officers, real estate agents etc often get stuck in their business. There are so many “shiny new objects” that we can feel overwhelmed by what we should do and when we should do it.

At times I feel the same way. Like you, I can get involved in way too many project that cause me to lose sight of the main goal. When I am speaking to business owners, I know their business is in trouble based on these three warning signs:

  • They don’t have a clear vision of what they want their business to be
  • They are caught up in “busy” task and not “productive” task
  • They can’t clearly explain the main goal they must accomplish everyday

But there is some really GOOD NEWS on how they can fix these problems FAST! It all starts with asking the right questions. The 3 questions I ask myself are listed below. Give it a shot because you may just get the clarity that you are looking for!

“We will get better answers, when we ask better questions” – Tony Robbins

  1. What do you want?
  2. How bad do you want it?
  3. What do you need to invest in to make it happen?

I am siting at the Radisson Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas at the Celebritize Your Business Conference listening to PJ McClure and Mike Crow. Here is the reality…before this conference I had never heard of either of these guys and now I am thinking that I wish I had known about them earlier.

I am feverishly taking notes, not just for the sake of note taking, but I want to make sure I begin to implement these nuggets of wisdom in my business. I will be going back and blogging on these subjects for months to come, but I felt this first blog was the most important one to start with.

So here are the 5 most important questions.

  1. What do you want?
  2. What are you doing now?
  3. Are your current actions getting you closer to what you want?
  4. What changes do you need to make and what do you need to eliminate?
  5. Are you ready to begin today?

Think about these questions, your answers will dictate your actions that create your future.

So I am driving Angie to the Mac store yesterday to get her a hot pink case for her new Mac Book Pro. (A girl has got to look good) Plus it will match the colors for her blog SlimDownDiva.com. Anyway, as many of you know I am a big fan of 80′s music, so anytime we are in the Diva’s car, I get to listen to Sirius Satellite radio’s all 80′s on 8.

8 Invaluable Business Lessons I Learned the Hard Way

Monday, July 18th, 2011

Over the years I have learned a lot about business and I still have a lot to learn but there are several lessons that have made there way into my life and have proven to be very invaluable.

I started in business in my early twenties and back then there was this arrogant part of me that thought I knew everything – boy was that kid wrong. I made a lot of mistakes, but I learned from each one of them and now that I am further down the road, I wanted to share some of the most important lessons.

  1. Make money fast. The simple fact is that a business that is not making money is an expensive hobby, so you have to lace up the boots, hit the streets, and find paying customers.
  2. Building a business takes and investment of time, energy, and money. You must be willing to invest all three.
  3. Under-promise and Over-deliver. Give the customer more than they expect and you can expect more customers than you can handle.
  4. Network, Network, and Network some more. Business is about personal connections. Invest in people and people will invest in you.
  5. Build Your Database. When you go out to network, don’t just collect cards – collect relationships.
  6. Develop Your Personal Brand. People will buy from people they know, like, and trust so put time into your personal brand and people will put their trust into you.
  7. Marketing is what makes the Magic happen. Regardless of the business you may think you are in, you are actually in the business of marketing. The best person doesn’t always get the customer, but the best marketer will never go hungry so invest in becoming a student of marketing.
  8. Do what you say. You can’t be everything to everyone so pick your customers based on the one’s that you can help the most and they will in turn send you more business. If you make a pricing mistake, eat it yourself.

How did I learn these the hard way? Simple I made mistakes. But remember a mistake is only a mistake if you make it once. If you repeat it, then it becomes a habit.

So last night Angie ask me to run out to the store and pick up a few items. One item she requested was spinach. Now you have to understand that we had just finished a one hour boot camp class where my idea of success is surviving and I had a flyer I needed to get out for a speaking engagement I have coming up so my mind was everywhere but spinach.

However, like a good husband would do, I gathered up myself (and the disc of the flyer to drop off and get printed, because you shouldn’t have to make multiple trips right?) and went out to the store.

I hurried through the grocery picking up all the items on the list including the spinach.

When I returned home, Angie quickly realized that the spinach was out of date and smelled like 30 day old grapes left in a cooler that also served as a coffee table. (don’t ask, it’s a long story)

At any rate, we had to return to the store and exchange the old spinach for new spinach. Angie went with me—should I be surprised by this?

So what have a learned from my adventure that will help you in your business?

  1. You better remain focused on your goal or you will miss the mark, especially when there are distractions!
  2. Not everyone is your customer. Sometimes you had to return the spoiled one’s for much better one’s that love you!
  3. Never, ever, under any circumstances bring bad spinach home. Not really a business lesson, but a lesson learned none the less

Have a great day and remember, if you are not making sales, then you don’t have a business, you have an expensive hobby!
