Have you given any thought to developing your legacy? What will you be known for? What will they say at your funeral? What are you doing now that will impact future generations?

When I was in my 20′s I didn’t give any thought to these questions whatsoever, but I shared with my church class recently that building a legacy is easier now than ever before. Many of you know that my good friend, Denai Vaughn, The Networking Queen, recently passed away and a fatal car accident on I-40 in Amarillo, TX.

But even though Denai Vaughn is no longer with us on this planet, her legacy lives on. She started early and worked often to build and leave a legacy. We live in a world that the barriers that once blocked many people no longer exist. You don’t need a publicist to write and publish a book. You don’t need a radio station to make you an “on the air” talent and you don’t need a TV crew to create your own TV show. You just need a few tools and the desire to make a difference.

Here are 4 easy ways to start building your legacy now.

  1. Start a blog
  2. Start a podcast
  3. Do video marketing
  4. Write a book, I did and you can see it here

Don’t let excuses stop you from sharing your message. These are just four ways that anyone can share their gifts and talents with the world! I want to challenge you to start sharing, future generations (and us now) are counting on you!

5 Questions we all need to answer

Sunday, October 30th, 2011

Do you ever wonder about success? How do some people appear to find success so easy, yet others struggle. Over the years I have studied success and I have come up with 5 questions that I ask myself on a regular basis.

I challenge my coaching clients to do the same and I would encourage you to, not just look at these questions, but also ask yourself…what are your answers?

  1. What books are you currently reading?
  2. What information are you listening to?
  3. Who are your 5 closest advisers?
  4. Where are you spending your money?
  5. Where, what & who is on your calendar for the next 30 days?

Leave me a comment below and let’s talk about success!

3 Warning Signs Your Business is in Trouble

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Small business owners, Solopreneurs, and professional service providers such as coaches, speakers, loan officers, real estate agents etc often get stuck in their business. There are so many “shiny new objects” that we can feel overwhelmed by what we should do and when we should do it.

At times I feel the same way. Like you, I can get involved in way too many project that cause me to lose sight of the main goal. When I am speaking to business owners, I know their business is in trouble based on these three warning signs:

  • They don’t have a clear vision of what they want their business to be
  • They are caught up in “busy” task and not “productive” task
  • They can’t clearly explain the main goal they must accomplish everyday

But there is some really GOOD NEWS on how they can fix these problems FAST! It all starts with asking the right questions. The 3 questions I ask myself are listed below. Give it a shot because you may just get the clarity that you are looking for!

“We will get better answers, when we ask better questions” – Tony Robbins

  1. What do you want?
  2. How bad do you want it?
  3. What do you need to invest in to make it happen?

So I am driving Angie to the Mac store yesterday to get her a hot pink case for her new Mac Book Pro. (A girl has got to look good) Plus it will match the colors for her blog SlimDownDiva.com. Anyway, as many of you know I am a big fan of 80′s music, so anytime we are in the Diva’s car, I get to listen to Sirius Satellite radio’s all 80′s on 8.

Have You Overlooked the Obvious Too?

Friday, May 20th, 2011

This is the email I sent to my coaching clients today. I think it really says a lot. The story is from Lou Holtz book Winning Every Day

Whenever I stress the importance of fundamentals, I like to tell the story about the guy who walked into the pet shop to buy a bird.

He noticed several of them were listed at $1.90. When he went to buy one, the pet store owner said, “You don’t want those birds, sir. I have the ideal bird here for you and it’s only $692.”

The guy looked at the bird and said, “Why it’s just like all those other birds. How come it’s so expensive?”

The store owner replied, “Ah, but this bird is different. It can talk and sing. The other birds just sit there.”

The guy thought for a minute and said, “Gee, it’s a lot of money, but I live alone and would love to have the company.” So he bought the bird for $692.

The next day the customer returned to the store, found the owner, and complained, “I paid $692 for that bird and it doesn’t talk or sing.”

The owner said, “Well did you buy the bird a mirror?”

The guy says “No”.

The owner said, “if you buy the bird a mirror he will look at himself in the mirror and I guarantee he will talk to you, I’ve got a mirror here for only $23.” So the customer purchased the mirror.

He returned irate the next day and complained, “My bird looked at himself in the mirror, but he still doesn’t talk or sing.”

The owner replied, “That’s impossible. I have the same type of bird as you. Why, just today he got up, looked at himself in the mirror, and then ran up and down his ladder.”

The guy stopped him and said, “What ladder?”

The owner said, “You mean to tell me that you didn’t buy the ladder! That bird won’t talk or sing unless he first gets his exercise on the ladder. We have a ladder on sale today for only $27.” The guy bought the ladder.

Over the next three days the storekeeper sold him a mirror, a ladder, and a swing.

At the end of the week, the customer returned in tears. He told the storekeeper, “My bird looked at himself in the mirror, climbed up and down in his ladder and swung on his swing, and keeled over in his bath. Just before he died, he looked over to me and said, don’t they sell any food at that store?”

Getting Your Turn in Life

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

I will usually send out some “tweets” from church service on Wednesday nights, but last night I was so caught up in the message – My Turn that I decided to write a blog. We all are at some place in life where we are hoping to get “our turn” whatever that is for you. It could be a job, a promotion, a family, a spouse, starting your own business, but whatever it is, we really want it to be our turn.

I work with a lot of business owners, entrepreneurs, and sales people who are putting together strategies for it to become their turn and I felt this was a very timely message.

Here were some key take-away moments for me and I wanted to share them with you.

  1. You have to be in the right position for your turn to come
  2. You have to lay the groundwork (commitment and consistency) for your turn to come
  3. You can never give up hope that your turn is coming
  4. You sometimes have to get up, stand up, and ask for your turn
  5. You can never quit

I don’t know what your turn looks like to you, but I promise that it is coming if you don’t give up.

How I Became a Speaker and a Coach

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

One of the biggest questions I get asked is…”Tim, I want to become a speaker and coach, could you tell me how you how did you become a speaker and a coach?” I could spend hours, days, and months on various strategies but it really comes down to some very simple items…

  1. Have a strong, burning desire to see others achieve their highest potential
  2. Have something valuable to add, contribute, and share that solves problems

But the biggest thing you need to become a speaker, coach, and trainer is not something you can buy – it is influence.

Influence is what others give you. I can’t buy it, rent it, or borrower it. Influence is given to you by people who allow you to speak into their lives. Influence can take a lifetime to earn and a moment to lose. Influence is to be honored, cherished, and handled with care because it is a gift that others have entrusted you to hold.

So to everyone who has given me the influence to speak into their lives, I want to say I am humbled, honored, and eternally grateful. Thank you all!

I love coaching people. I love helping them realize their potential, gain new confidence, and reach new levels in their business. I have also found that reaching your goals requires asking yourself 3 big questions. Here they are:

  1. Am I focused on implementation?
  2. Am I easily distracted by shinny objects?
  3. Have I surrounded myself with people who push me to the next level?

Focusing on implementation is critical to reaching your goals. Everyday you must take action towards your goals.

Stay away from distractions. Anything that doesn’t further you toward your goal is a distraction no matter how enticing it may seem.

We all need someone to push us and ask us the tough questions. It is the only way I know to go to the next level.

I would love to know your thoughts, join the conversation by leaving a comment below.

How to Unleash Your Leadership

Monday, March 28th, 2011

There is a steady flow of information in the form of books, articles, white papers and training all in the context of “what is leadership” or “how to develop a leader”?. In this post, I will avoid those two questions and write about two others that I believe might be on the minds of a lot of readers and they are:

Why does better leadership make a difference? and

How does better leadership achieve those differences?

Leadership is a highly unique form of human behavior that requires the integration of character, knowledge and experience. So what can you do if you step up and unleash your leadership potential? Change the world.

Your journey to unleashing your leadership potential begins with a great understanding of self. Discover your personality traits and how they relate to leadership. When we know ourselves, we can maximize our positive traits, and become aware of our weaker areas, which help us to achieve our leadership potential. Once you understand and know yourself, next you must hone your communication skills. These are not limited to your public speaking skills either. This includes your writing style and your body language. Your ability to communicate effectively enhances your ability to improve interpersonal relationships. Another important skill is to learn how to learn. Examine different teaching methods and learning styles to identify how you and those you may lead learn best. This skill will greatly enhance your ability to make decisions and give clear instructions.

An Exceptional Leader is one that recognizes the value of harnessing the skills and abilities of team members and leads them toward greater efficiency and effectiveness.

…And so leader is not a title and leadership is not something you are born into. Leadership is something you develop.

This is what Dr. Ken Blanchard, in his book “The Heart of A Leader” had to say about good leaders; “If you want to know why your people are not performing well, step up to the mirror and take a peek.”

Building a company, sales force, or leading a team can be extremely rewarding or extremely frustrating. The secret is in the reward. At the end of the day, I am a pretty no nonsense kind of guy and I think the paycheck is really the ultimate reward, but how do you reward your employees to be more productive and profitable?

Here are some keys to rewards that work!

  • Not everyone wants the same reward.  Some employees love money as a reward and others love time off. Typically sales people are motivated by bonuses, but operations staff value time off more.
  • Reward them based on what they value most. It is your job as the leader to find out what each of your employees value the most. Invest in getting to know them. You don’t have to be secretive either, you can just be straightforward and ask.
  • Don’t ever let it become expected. I would often come into the office on Friday’s and send the entire operations team home for the day. It was totally unexpected, but it paid very large dividends. Our employee turn over was practically zero and our productivity was very high. They key is to make it unexpected.

Give this a shot. I know you will receive the same results I did.
