How to Build Great Relationships Using Social Media

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

I was reminded again today on the power of social media to build relationships. Before 10 AM I had a half dozen people ask me how golf was this past weekend. At first, I didn’t really think more about that other than it was polite conversation. However, later today I realized that they knew about my golf adventures because of the postings I had made on my facebook account.

After giving this some thought here are some things I learned…

  1. You never know who is looking at your post. We often think that that the only people watching are those who are commenting. That is not true.
  2. You need to make sure you realize what you are posting and if what you are saying is how you want to be perceived. Perception is reality and you can not take back outburst of anger and frustration.

That being said I also learned how valuable social networking can be in building relationships. Most people will post things that they are interested in. Things such as family, sports, quotes, etc. People love to talk about what they enjoy, so how can this help you in your business?

If business is about building relationships, then taking the time to review post people make can help you build better relationships. What if you have a client or referral partner that you are trying to build your business from? What if you took time to review their social media post prior to your next meeting or conversation? How would that impact your relationship growth?

If you do a little research, you will find out exactly what is on your prospects mind and then you can spend time discussing those things in an effort to build the relationship. Very powerful!

So here is a quick action plan that you can use today to grow your business:

  1. Look up 5 of your prospective referral partners
  2. See what their last 5 post were about
  3. Give them a call
  4. Ask them about those specific things they are posting about (You don’t have to say you saw it on social media, just make it part of the conversation)

Try these action steps and let me know how it goes! I am sure you will be amazed at the results!

Remember what I always say,

“If you want to be successful, you must take the on-line, off-line when it comes to building relationships!”

The Two Words That Will Keep You From Reaching Your Potential

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Have you ever needed advice? Have you ever asked for advice? If so, what happened when you received the advice?

Lot’s of people want to know what will make them successful. They want to know how to reach their maximum potential and how to achieve success. The problem is when they get the answer, they often reply with the two words that destroy their destiny…yeah but.

Here is the truth about success. It takes HARD WORK. It takes FOCUS. It takes DEDICATION and PERSEVERANCE. It takes, TIME AND MONEY. I know, I have built several successful businesses and each one of them took all of these and more.

Let’s take this example. You ask a coach the following question…

“What do I need to do to grow my business in the current economy?”

The coach replies, “You need to invest more time and more money”

Your reply will determine your success. If you reply with, “yeah but” then what you are really saying is that you want success to be easier. You want a quick fix solution.

I think we all need to get real with life and ask the hard questions. The questions that so many are afraid to ask in the sake of saving someones feelings. If you really care about someone you will ask the tough questions and be silent until you get an honest response. I am more interested in you being successful, than me being popular.

The number one reason your business isn’t working right now, is that you are not working right now. If you want to reach your maximum potential replace the “yeah but” with “great, what else can I do in addition” and you will begin taking small steps that will lead to big victories!

Keep Believing, Keep Dreaming, and Keep Moving Forward!

An Amazing Discovery! Are You Living in the Comfort Zone?

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

I saw a post today that said NBC has canceled Tony Robbins new show, Breakthrough. I thought to myself, what is wrong with America when the majority of people would rather sit like drones in front of their TV’s watching Desperate Housewives, The Bachelorette, or somebody get voted off some island rather than having the opportunity to learn how to effectively change their lives.

I am tired of hearing about people who live way below their gifts and talents when we are fortunate to be in a world where the information to help us change our lives and become better is all around us. It is why I say that the first step to reaching your goals is this…

Simply DECIDE!

Decide you are worth it. Decide your family is worth it. Decide that the lives of people you will affect are worth it! The amazing discovery is that YOU have the power to do amazing things! YOU have the power over the choices you make, and if your life is not where you need it to be, then make different choices. Get the information you need, make a plan, and take action. I am tired of people that make excuses and the people who patronize them by telling them things like…

“it’s the system that keeps you down” or “the rich get richer and the poor get poorer”

PLEASE! I come from a single parent who raised me in the projects. If I can find a way out, so can you, but when I see a TV show like Breakthrough get canceled, I realize that the vast majority of people just not have woken up to this amazing discovery. No wonder our world is going to hell in a hand basket.

I am left with the conclusion that people love to live in the “comfort zone”. You know that area where the temperature in not to warm enough for you to get up an change the setting? I have found that when people are sick and tired of being sick and tired they will intentionally seek out change, but until then they will sit in a pot of hot water not realizing they are boiling to death. It is a shame.

I guess when the temperature in the room gets to hot, someone will have to get up and change the thermostat. So here is a question…

Now that you know it is YOU that controls YOUR life and YOU have the power to reach your dreams, will you?

How to Get in Your Peak Performance Zone

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

I love making observations on success and asking the question, “is there a formula for success?” In other words what makes one person more successful than another? Why is it that some people rise to the top, others hang around the middle, and the rest bring up the rear?

I spend a lot of time reading, researching, and observing. I really like taking in all of the senses, hearing great speakers, talking to them, and reading their books. All of these help give me insight and principles that I use in turn to grow my business and share with others.

Over the years there have been several key points that I have noticed to be a formula for success. So many people are looking for that “elusive” part of life where everything seems to come together and you feel like you are in the zone. We have all felt the “peak performance zone” at different points in our life. It is those times where you feel that you are doing exactly what you were born to do. Excellence, ease, and joy come naturally.

I want to share with you some points that I have observed to help you find and stay in the “Peak Performance Zone”

  1. Do What You are Passionate About. Every great leader, athlete, and average Joe that is enjoying the “PPZ” has an unquenchable passion for what they are doing. Work feels like play to them.
  2. Have a Focused Purpose. People who operate in the “PPZ” have a singular focused purpose and nearly 100% of the time, that purpose is centered around helping other people. In other words, they are people focused, not me focused.
  3. Never Stop Learning! People operating in the “PPZ” are always seeking out new knowledge. They have a thirst for information and they understand that they do not know everything.
  4. Fast Decisions. It is good to make fast decisions. Over thinking can drive you out of the “PPZ”, so get enough information, but make decisions quickly.
  5. Daily Action! I can never emphasize this enough. Getting in the “PPZ” requires daily action.

Ultimately, I have found that it really comes down to having an immense joy about what you are doing. When you love your work, the rest seems to fall into place naturally.

The Magic of Thinking Big!

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

I think I may be addicted. Every time Willie Wonka comes on TV, I find myself drawn into this maze of endless possibilities and opportunity. I could be doing just about anything else, but if that show comes on, I feel compelled to watch.

It seems everyday that I am reminded about the magic of thinking big. I love both of the Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movies. They let us know that there is power in Big Thinking! So often our circumstances are a matter of not thinking about what could be, and just accepting what is.

Regardless of where you are, it is always possible to re-define your business, your life, and your possibilities. As we grow up we stop using our imagination. When we are kids, anything is possible. We play all sorts of games imaging ourselves as pro athletes, fireman, police officers, etc. The possibilities are limitless. However, as we get older we don’t always want to take as many risk. Fear of loss begins to set in and hold us back from possibilities.

As with anything, it begins with a decision. You need to make a decision to start Thinking BIG!

Here are some quick tips to help you start thinking BIG!

  1. Schedule time to think!
  2. Get inspiration from a book, a speech, a CD, or music!
  3. Ask yourself what it would look like if you did what you thought you could not!
  4. Grab a pen and paper and write your visions down!

Here are a few questions for you to start thinking about…

  • How often do you schedule thinking and creative time in your life?
  • What is possible for you, if you change your thinking?
  • What could be accomplished if you had a different perspective?

What if?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Do have and “what if’s” in your life? What is you had made a different choice? What if you had left 10 minutes earlier? What if you had said something nice?

Life can be full of “what if’s”. In fact the “what if’s” can drive you crazy if you let them. The most troubling “what if’s” are the ones that occurred in the past. The past is over. You simply can not go back and change the past, so dwelling on the “what if’s” of the past is damaging to your future.

Instead, try focusing on the “what if’s” of your future.

What if you re-defined your life? What if you re-defined what you believed is possible? What if you made that extra call, sent that extra letter, or made that extra effort?

What would happen to your life if you focused on the “what if’s” of your future, then moved them over to the “why not” category and finally placed them in the “I must do it now” column?

How would that look?

How to Deal with Uncertainty

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

As I talk to and coach people, one of the biggest problems facing Americans today is UNCERTAINTY. Whenever you find yourself uncertain about your career, your job, your finances, your future, or whatever then you are setting yourself up to become trapped.

If we are not growing, learning, and achieving then we are stagnate. Too many people right now are looking for someone else to solve their problem. A good friend of mine once said

“It doesn’t matter what happens in the White House, it only matters what happens in your house.”

I do believe we need strong leaders in our country with a vision for freedom and a future, but you also need the same in your life. Here are some tips to overcome uncertainty and get on track for a life of passion and purpose!

1. Realize that you are the CEO of your life. You get the final say in the choices YOU make. Take inventory of your current situation and the choices that have lead you to this point. What new choice do you need to make to live the life you desire?

2. Get a new vision for your future. Find a mentor, role model, or opportunity you have always wanted to pursue. See what they have done to make it in today’s market. See what their vision for the future is and began to craft your new vision!

3. Feed you mind with opportunity! When times are good we often dismiss how important self improvement really is to our life. What are you listening to in your car? Who are you listening to? What are you reading? Feeding your mind is critical to changing your perspective and your future!

4. Take Action! Uncertainty can lead to fear and just like paper covers rock, action conquers fear. Don’t wait to take action towards your dream. Someone once asked me when the best time to go for their dream was and that time is now. No one is guaranteed tomorrow, so don’t wait! Get up, get a new vision for your life, and get moving!
