I meet people all the time who want to become a coach, speaker or trainer, but they simply don’t know how or where to get started.

If you do a quick google search you will find thousands of websites, e-books, conferences or study at home guides that will show you how to get in the business; however the question then becomes…

“which resource can you trust?”

John Maxwell says “It is not only important what you learn but who you learn it from”

Growing up in the projects, I discovered that this was very true. If I truly wanted to get out of poverty, I needed to find the right information from the right people and then apply it daily in my life.

I started coaching, speaking and training 5 years ago and I have attended, purchased and studied just about everyone out there in the training world of coaches. Last year I ran across an opportunity that has literally changed my life, opened new doors and unlocked numerous opportunities – I joined The John Maxwell Team of independent certified coaches, speakers and trainers.

Because I get asked about getting into the business so often, I wanted to share this resource with you. John Mawxwell and Paul Martinelli recently recorded a video that I believe will really launch your success in the coaching, speaking and training industry. Click here to watch the John Maxwell Coaching Program interview.

I don’t receive any compensation from this should you decide to join. I just simple wanted to share with you what I did to further launch my career. You can decide for yourself if it is right for you.

John says. “If you want to do what I do, then you must be willing to do what I did” and The John Maxwell certification program is what I did for my career.

3 Questions to Ask Before the Year is Over

Monday, November 28th, 2011

As we approach the end of the year, we tend to rush forward full speed ahead.  With holiday madness and other tasks that need to be done by the end of the year, who has time to neatly tie a ribbon around the last 12 months and call it a wrap?  However, finishing strong may be just the thing you need to do to create a strong start for the new year.

What if bringing completion to what has past is as important if not more so than planning for the future?  What if you knew that you are essentially sabotaging your future success by not stopping and taking stock of what you have accomplished this year and where you are at present?

In sports, there are many examples of where a strong finish is the difference between success and second best.  For example, that last thrust forward of the wheel in a bike sprint to win by an inch or the running back who reaches out his hand with the ball to barely cross the goal line with seconds remaining on the clock.

How can you make the next few weeks a strong finish for your year?  What can you do to bring completion to this chapter of your life?  Completion is what allows you to leave the past in the past.  Otherwise, it is like dragging a wagon of unfinished business along with you every day.  Not only is it exhausting but it also prevents you from achieving your dreams in the future.  After all, you can’t climb a mountain with a wagon in tow.

“There is no room in the future for your past.”

As you bring this year to a close, take an hour and consider the following 3 questions:

  1. What did I accomplish this year?  Make a list of all your accomplishments, big and small from the last 12 months and celebrate!
  2. What did I hope to accomplish but didn’t?
  3. Is this something I still really want?  (You are not allowed to beat yourself up on this step.)

Once you have the questions answered, take a quick inventory of the following bullet  points.

  • Make a list of all the people in your life for which you are grateful.  Contact at least 5 of these people and thank them for what they bring to your life.
  • Is there anyone I need to forgive or make amends with?  If so, lighten your load and do what you feel is necessary to forgive, repair, or let go of this burden.
  • Do at least one thing each day that allows you to simply enjoy today.  There is no better step for honoring the past and creating an inspiring future than being fully present and enjoying where you are right now.

What are you thankful for?

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

As I think about the Thanksgiving Holiday, I can’t help but think that we should really be thankful everyday of our life. I don’t believe it takes one day for us to gather and give thanks, rather I believe it should be an attitude that we live out our lives with an attitude of gratitude and thanksgiving everyday.

Today I wanted to share with you my list of things that I am thankful for and I would like to know yours as well.

Would you take a moment to leave a comment on this post with what you are thankful for?

I think that it is important that we write down our goals, our dreams and our thanks. Why? Because there is something powerful in putting our thoughts down on paper or in this case a blog. It cements those thoughts and gives them power in our lives.

So with that being said, here is a list of things I am thankful for…

  • God
  • My wife and family
  • My friends
  • My customers
  • Our freedom in the USA
  • Health
  • My many blessings
  • YOU!

So what are you thankful for? Leave a comment below.

I am usually speaking to a room full of business owners, executives or entrepreneurs, but in when you write a children’s book your audience changes. With Squiggly’s Race to the Ark due out November 30th, I had the chance to do a preview reading to the k-3rd grade classes at Christian Community School in White House, Tn.

I have to say that it was a blast! The kid’s loved to story and the illustrations. I think they are all Squiggly fans right now but something really cool happened after I finished reading them the story. Once we had finished the Squiggly, the kids all had comments about the moral of the story and they were all correct.

Some said that the moral was that God created each one of us uniquely different and gave each one of us gifts to help others.

Others said that we needed to be nice, even to people who are mean to us.

Other children said that we have to keep going even when things are tough.

The Bible talks about “out of the mouth of babes” and I witnessed that full force today. I have to say it was really cool, but one of the best parts was at the very end. I was sitting on the side of the stage as the teachers dismissed the children back to their classes. What happened next was totally unexpected. I was bum rushed by an avalanche of children. From hive fives to hugs, they all wanted to get their picture made with the book, so that is exactly what we did.

I learned a lot today, but the biggest lesson was seize the moment, be spontaneous and have fun. We did that for sure and I think we all need to do that more often.

What will you do to seize the moment, be spontaneous and have fun? Something to think about for sure!

It was 3 years ago when I first got the story, Squiggly’s Race to the Ark. I had originally intended it to be a book for adults, similar to Who Moved My Cheese.

People ask me what caused me to write the story and the answer is really simple. When I go to church, I like to take notes. During one service, Pastor Maury Davis said “It was by perseverance that the snail made it to the Ark” I love quotes and this one stuck with me. I wrote it down in my journal and it just kept sticking in my mind. The next morning I got up and had the entire story so I sat down at my computer and typed it out.

After I wrote the story, I put it in my desk drawer. I wasn’t really sure what to do with it until my wife found the manuscript one day and asked what me to tell her more about my plans for this book.

To be really honest, I didn’t know if the story was any good, even though she said differently. (She is supposed to say good things about my work, right?)

I’ll fast forward 2 years to a meeting I had with Robby McGee of New Life International. He had been wanting to start a publishing division and had been looking for the right opportunity. He saw that opportunity in Squiggly and so we began the process of publishing a children’s book. I had published several other books, but never a full color, fully illustrated children’s book.

It has been a huge learning experience to say the least :) After spending that last year working through illustrations, editing and a whole host of other learning experiences the book has finally gone to print. Fingers crossed and a few answered prayers, we will have the first order of books back at the end of November.

Along the way, I have learned a ton; however, 5 invaluable lessons stand out.

  1. Never doubt your gifts. I let this book sit dormant for too long and even when several people said it should be a children’s book, I still had some doubt about how it would be received and even if it was worthy enough to be printed. God doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called :)
  2. It’s okay to jump in and learn new things. Like I said, I know how to write and publish a text book, but I had no clue how to get a children’s book completed. I had to learn a lot from picking the right illustrator, to getting it printed.
  3. Don’t be afraid to jump outside your comfort zone. My true comfort zone is working with adults, specifically in business and the areas of sales, marketing & leadership. This week I am reading the book at a school to children from k-5th grade. Talk about out of the comfort zone…I would feel more comfortable be giving a keynote to a room of 5000 adults than 60 kids.
  4. Be patient, but unafraid to voice your opinion. Great work takes time to complete so patience is necessary. Along the way you will get a lot of opinions and some criticism. Take the good with the bad, but when your gut tells you to hold your ground, do it. Don’t be afraid to give your opinion and stand up for your beliefs.
  5. Have a plan, but be flexible. You have to have a plan, but no matter how well you plan, there will be times you have to back up and punt. For example, we had to change illustrators 3 months into the project. That caused some anxiety and delays, but it was well worth it in the end.

I am sure as I reflect more, there will be other lessons I have learned. These are the one’s that stand out right now, but I am excited to see the book come back from the printer. We have set up a website for Squiggly’s Race to the Ark as well as a Facebook Fan Page. Be sure to check them out, because the book will be for sale soon :)

Most people don’t know my background, but once they understand where I came from, they better understand why I like to get stuff done fast and not settle for excuses.

This is me standing in front of the house I grew up in, 720 Conway Place. What is more important is that 720 Conway Place is in the projects. When I tell people that I was raised in the projects, they don’t believe me, so I recently went back to take a picture.

Here are 5 reasons that i shouldn’t have any measure of success in my life, but I do anyway.

  1. My father passed away when I was 3
  2. My mother was on government assistance
  3. I grew up in the projects

So if I had 3 big strikes against me, then why am I not in a beat down, broke, unsuccessful life now? The answer is simple…

“Your situation with either provide you excuses or inspiration, you choose.”

I could have easily said that because I didn’t have a father growing up, I had no direction, but I didn’t. I intentionally sought out mentors in my life back then and still to this day. I could have said that because we were poor, I didn’t have the resources to go to college, but I didn’t. I started working when I was 14 and sought out the information on how to go to college when you don’t have a dime to your name ( that should be the title of a book :) ) I could have got into the wrong crowd growing up in the projects, but I didn’t because I saw that wasn’t the way out.

The point is that you can make excuses or opportunities, it is your choice. Where you are and where you are going has everything to do with

  1. What you are reading
  2. Who you are learning from
  3. Who you are hanging out with
  4. Where you are spending your money
  5. What you are willing to tolerate

And hear is another surprising fact…I wasn’t a model student. I got average grades at best and even worse grades in English yet I have successfully published several books including my new children’s book – Squiggly’s Race to the Ark

How does that happen? Simple, when you have a goal, you find a way!

You are free to make excuses, just don’t expect that successful people will spend much, if any time with you. You have one life, how you spend it is your choice, so choose wisely.

Feel free to leave me a comment, not an excuse below

These Questions Challenged me, how about you?

Saturday, November 12th, 2011

I have had a lot of questions this week about how to gain confidence, get more business, and accelerate your success. It seems so many of us (me at times too) get caught up in the “thinking” process and fail to make it to the actual doing and accomplishing goals.

One of the biggest challenges people face is simply a lack of vision for their life. I believe that comes from not living on purpose.

What I mean is that so many people take part in activities with no agenda whatsoever. They attend events, listen to sermons, and go places, yet they leave with no benefit. Why? Because they have no clearly defined purpose.

People will say they want something, yet they will not take the actions necessary to make it happen. Why? Because they have no clear vision of how to get it. They listen to the doubts, fears, and walk around with a low self-esteem.

I want to challenge you with a set of questions that I want you to really consider. Be honest and take control of your dreams, your goals, and your life. Here they are…

  1. What fear or doubt is holding you back?
  2. What are you currently tolerating from yourself? others?
  3. What do you really want?
  4. What will you need to learn, invest in or do to get it?
  5. Are you willing to pay the price?

I have also learned that you can’t just ask these questions one time and be done. You have to step up to the plate and constantly ask yourself where you are in the process.

Some say success is hard, it isn’t – it is just reserved for those few who choose to overcome.

What will it take to go for your dream?

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

Every now and then certain people come into your life that you know are heading for big things. They light up a room and bring joy and encouragement to everyone they meet. Denai Vaughn was one of those all to rare bright shining lights in this world. Tragically, she went  to heaven on Monday November 7th as a result of an automobile accident.

Denai came into my life about 5 years ago as I was just entering the world of coaching, speaking and training. We met through a mutal friend on Facebook and over the years I interviewed her on my podcast and she interviewed me on her podcast. She was on of the first people to endorse and review my very first book. I could always count on Denai for an endorsement, introduction, or simply a word of encouragement.

Denai had a real zest for life and helping people connect. She was affectionately known as “The Networking Queen” I can’t tell you how many of my presentations contain references to her branding as an example of how to stand out from the crowd. You knew Denai had entered the room or conversation with every “WHOHOO” she shouted. She was an encourager of people. She loved Jesus, her husband and her little girl. She believed that everyone had enormous potential and she used every form of media to make that fact known.

She made so many connections for others with never asking for help herself. That was her style. The notion that it is truly better to give than receive.

She was in the middle of launching several new ventures including Excellence Worx but on the day she passed away, she had completed what would be her final podcast. The topic…Episode 44: Grief – Loss of a Spouse, Parent, Child(ren)

Unknowingly, this podcast would become her words to us from beyond this life on how to handle the sudden loss of a loved one.

So what do you do when that phone call comes in telling you that your friend has unexpectedly passed away? How do you react? What do you say?

I don’t know that I have all or even any of the answers, but I do know this…

  • Life is short
  • No one is guaranteed tomorrow or even the next breath
  • EVERYONE has a hope, a dream or a goal AND

Right now is the time that you need to start working towards your dream, not tomorrow, not next week, and not when that little voice of excuses tells you that it can’t happen. Now is the time we all put on our big boy or girl pants and get started making the world a better place.

For me, I have the comfort of knowing that Denai is now networking on streets of gold. She has gone ahead of us to make new connections, just like she did while she was with us here. I am sure that when we make it to the gates, we will see Denai and after a loud “WHOHOO” she will begin making introductions, connections, and asking that one question we all need to get better at…

“what can I do for you?”

7 Critical Questions to ask before you hire a business coach

Saturday, November 5th, 2011

It is amazing how many people today are becoming business coaches, life coaches etc. By and large the coaching industry is open to anyone who randomly decides one day to “become a coach”. I see ads all the time for becoming a coach and just because someone gets a certificate, training course or some other credential doesn’t mean they are a good business coach.

Before I became a business coach I worked in the mortgage industry. I started and sold 3 different mortgage companies and during my time in that industry I saw how many people who one day were bagging groceries for a living and the next day they were a loan originator. The only requirement to become a loan officer was that you were breathing. Unfortunately, I am seeing that same trend happen in the coaching business.

It is almost like saying…”Hey if you want to start a business, then become a coach. Anyone can do it!” Give me a break!

If you are a business owner, want to start a business, or work in sales and are considering hiring a business coach here are 7 questions that you need to ask before you pay one red cent to a coach.

  1. What is your business experience? (It better be real BIG, and in the area you NEED)
  2. What has been your business success? (It better be BIG)
  3. Why did you become a business coach? (Huge!)
  4. Do you have a coach? (They better answer yes) if so, who is it?
  5. What successes have your clients had? (Again, this is crucial)
  6. Can I talk to your clients? (The answer better be YES)
  7. What can I expect to get from coaching? (This is BIG! Most coaches can not correctly explain the difference between a coach, consultant and trainer)

Remember, just because someone says they are a business coach, doesn’t mean they have a clue of how to help you. You need to clearly define where you want to go and then carefully pick the person to get you there.

My personal coach, mentor and friend, John Maxwell says…

“It is not only important what you learn, but who you learn it from”

5 Questions we all need to answer

Sunday, October 30th, 2011

Do you ever wonder about success? How do some people appear to find success so easy, yet others struggle. Over the years I have studied success and I have come up with 5 questions that I ask myself on a regular basis.

I challenge my coaching clients to do the same and I would encourage you to, not just look at these questions, but also ask yourself…what are your answers?

  1. What books are you currently reading?
  2. What information are you listening to?
  3. Who are your 5 closest advisers?
  4. Where are you spending your money?
  5. Where, what & who is on your calendar for the next 30 days?

Leave me a comment below and let’s talk about success!
