Building a company, sales force, or leading a team can be extremely rewarding or extremely frustrating. The secret is in the reward. At the end of the day, I am a pretty no nonsense kind of guy and I think the paycheck is really the ultimate reward, but how do you reward your employees to be more productive and profitable?
Here are some keys to rewards that work!
- Not everyone wants the same reward. Some employees love money as a reward and others love time off. Typically sales people are motivated by bonuses, but operations staff value time off more.
- Reward them based on what they value most. It is your job as the leader to find out what each of your employees value the most. Invest in getting to know them. You don’t have to be secretive either, you can just be straightforward and ask.
- Don’t ever let it become expected. I would often come into the office on Friday’s and send the entire operations team home for the day. It was totally unexpected, but it paid very large dividends. Our employee turn over was practically zero and our productivity was very high. They key is to make it unexpected.
Give this a shot. I know you will receive the same results I did.
How often is it that we say, “if I only had more time…”
