Building a company, sales force, or leading a team can be extremely rewarding or extremely frustrating. The secret is in the reward. At the end of the day, I am a pretty no nonsense kind of guy and I think the paycheck is really the ultimate reward, but how do you reward your employees to be more productive and profitable?

Here are some keys to rewards that work!

  • Not everyone wants the same reward.  Some employees love money as a reward and others love time off. Typically sales people are motivated by bonuses, but operations staff value time off more.
  • Reward them based on what they value most. It is your job as the leader to find out what each of your employees value the most. Invest in getting to know them. You don’t have to be secretive either, you can just be straightforward and ask.
  • Don’t ever let it become expected. I would often come into the office on Friday’s and send the entire operations team home for the day. It was totally unexpected, but it paid very large dividends. Our employee turn over was practically zero and our productivity was very high. They key is to make it unexpected.

Give this a shot. I know you will receive the same results I did.

7 Ways to Let Your Customers Know You Love Them!

Friday, February 11th, 2011

John Maxwell said…”People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Let me start by wishing you a very Happy Valentine’s Day!

So do your customers know how much you care?

Here are 7 Fast Ways to Let Them Know You Care

  1. Send them cards on their birthday
  2. Call them on their birthday.
  3. Send an unexpected card letting them know you were simply thinking of them
  4. Put “Things that matter most” to them in your database. If you know your customer loves to golf, surprise them with a sleeve of golf balls for example.
  5. Give them an “unexpected” call. Just find out how they are doing, don’t have an agenda :)
  6. Throw a customer appreciation party. One of my clients actually rented out a movie theater just for his best clients and their families for a private screening of a new Disney movie
  7. Find out their anniversaries, children’s, and spouses birthdays and send cards to them on these events.

The One Word That Will Change Your Business

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

How often is it that we say, “if I only had more time…”

When it comes to the profession of selling, it is not about having more time, but about maximizing the time we have. Everyone is given the same 86,400 seconds in a day, yet not everyone uses them to their maximum potential.

I am not convinced we need more “time management”. How can you really manage time? An hour, is an hour, is an hour.

Instead what we manage is how we use that time. Top sales professionals understand the power of a single word when it comes to their productivity. Want to know what that one word is?

It is discipline.

Discipline is what top entrepreneurs, sales professionals, and business owners use to reach success.

  • They are disciplined about the structure of their day
  • They are disciplined about the time they spend on money making task
  • They are disciplined about their calendar, e-mail, and phone time
  • They are disciplined about making sales calls a priority

Simply put, they are disciplined. It takes time, energy, and effort to put discipline into your schedule. but the rewards are so worth every second.

3 Proven Tips for Success in Your Business

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

I get to work with some amazing people. People who have dreams and desires of owning their own business, starting a new business, and expanding the business they already have.

One of the biggest questions I get asked is…

“What is the one thing I need to do to grow my business?”

The answer is simple…and it is over 2000 years old…

Proverbs 13:11 says “Wealth from Get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time”

Here are 3 tips to help you succeed from this scripture…

  1. Don’t look for short cuts
  2. Stay focused daily on your goals
  3. Refuse to Quit

There are other things you need to do in order to succeed, but these are the basic fundamentals.

How are you doing in these areas? Leave a comment below

Feeling Overwhelmed? Take These 5 Steps to Get Control

Friday, October 8th, 2010

Do you ever feel over whelmed? How about uncertain?

Life has all these choices, demands, and requirements. Work can over whelm us. The news can over whelm us. Activities can over whelm us. There is certainly not shortage of information that can leaves us feeling like we are running a marathon in quick sand.

So what do we do? I have found there are 3 things you can do when you feel over whelmed.

  1. You can quit
  2. You can continue to flounder
  3. You can take action

The first two options will get you no where fast, but the third option is where the magic takes place. If you will take action, you can conquer your fears. But simply taking action is not the best you can do. The best you can do is take the right actions. Here is a simple formula to get you from over whelmed to in control.

  1. Write down the situation that is overwhelming you.
  2. Analyze the steps you need to take to go from feeling the burden to resolving the issue
  3. Write down what the goal is from getting the work done
  4. Write down the steps you need to take next
  5. Set a deadline and begin taking daily action toward your goal

We have a visual board in our office (that is just a fancy name for a dry erase board) Every time we have a project, when write it out on the board. This gives us a large space to “see” the whole picture and that allows us to create an action plan to get results.

Give this a shot with the next project you have always wanted to do. I bet you will be surprised by the results you will create!

Are you doing what you are called, designed, and gifted to do? Is your life and business growing each and every day?

The second step in the 7 Steps on How to Go from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be, is that you must capture a vision. You must be able to “see” what your future looks like. A vision needs to be strong enough to motivate you to action. Alone we are trapped with limited vision, but in a group, we can let our vision go to new heights.

Here is How to Awaken a New, Fresh Vision for Your Future

  1. Become a reader
  2. Listen to inspiring CD’s and podcast
  3. Go to Seminars
  4. Listen to speakers, preachers, and teachers
  5. Go to mastermind and networking groups
  6. Find a mentor or coach
  7. Meditate on your vision in a quiet place

But those are not the only steps you need to take. When you hear about an idea, you need to write your idea down right away! I did a post on 4 Keys to Put Your Idea Into Action Fast, that you need to read. Why is it so important to write your idea down immediately? See below…

Habakkuk 2:2

2 Then the LORD replied:
“Write down the revelation
and make it plain on tablets
so that a herald [b] may run with it.

Whenever I get inspired with a vision, I write it down and find the time to take action on it right away. Sometimes, if I am driving, I will use my iPad. You can see a video about saving time and capturing your ideas by clicking here.

What about you? Leave a comment below and let’s talk about vision!

The First Step You Must Take to Reach Your Destiny

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

As I talked about in my last post 7 Steps on How to Go from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be the first step you must take is to decide. I want to make sure that you understand what I mean by decide.

I looked up Mark 1 versus 16-18 to help illustrate the point.

16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” 18At once they left their nets and followed him.

Here are three keys to what a firm decision means…

  1. A firm decision must be quick and decisive. Go with your gut.
  2. A firm decision requires you to drop all other options, not look back and follow just one.
  3. A firm decision means that you will not always know what is around the corner but you have the faith to know that you are willing to pay the price.

As a coach I am often asked the following words…

I was thinking about…what do you think?

As you are looking at your business and life, I believe that you instinctively know what your gut is telling you to do. You need to make the decision, cut off all other possibilities and move forward with confidence. I think what Henry David Thoreau said sums it up perfectly..

“If one advances confidently in the direction of one’s dreams, and endeavors to live the life which on has imagined, one will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

I would like to know your thoughts! Please leave a comment below and lets talk about decisions!

3 Reasons Being First is Critical

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Did you that by 2011, that the projections are there will be over 25 million iPads. That is basically double what the projection is by the end of this year.

No one else even comes close. Not the Kindle and not any other “pad” in development.

Competitors will come along and they will be able to grab some of the share; however, the iPad will always be know as being first. So when you have that next big idea, it is critical that you take action right away. Never wait until things are perfect. Perfection is never achievable. Let the market tell you how to adjust and what they are needing.

  1. Being first means you are view as the leader. People love leaders. They want to follow someone who has the confidence to step out and take the lead. In a world where everyone is fighting for attention, being first is the best way to stand out.
  2. Being first means that you will always be ahead in terms of content. Once you put your idea into action, people will try to copy your idea. They will try and find the “holes” and construct a better plan. The critical part about being first is that everyone else will always be trying to catch up to you with content.
  3. Being first means that the competitors will always be compared to you! Do you ever notice how people will say, “I am going to FedEx this package” even when they mean they will use UPS, or the US Postal Service? That is because FedEx took the lead and now they receive tons of FREE advertising simply because they were first.

So what idea do you have that you need to take action on and be first?
